Coming from overseas to Australia to get married?
When marrying in Australia you may find that the legal requirements are different from your current country of residence.
As your Celebrant this is the preliminary information I need:
i) Date you are planning on getting married?
ii) Indicate the months you will be in Australia leading up the wedding?
iii) The date on which you will be arriving in Australia prior to the actual wedding?
NOTICE OF INTENDED MARRIAGE (NIM): Please be aware that the NIM needs to be submitted 1 month prior to the wedding date and is valid for 18 months. You may need to get the NIM signed and witnessed by an appropriate authority overseas, eg: an Australian Consular Officer, an Australian Diplomatic Officer, a notary public, employee of Australian Trade Commission (see explanatory notes NIM).
When the NIM has been signed and witnessed scan/email a copy to me along with copies of supporting documentation ie. Birth certificates/ passports. If you have been previously married I’ll need to see proof of divorce/ death of spouse.
Then, send the NIM to me by REGISTERED MAIL
Before the marriage takes place I will need to see all of your original documents. Please bring them with you – DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL PASSPORTS & BIRTH CERTIFICATES BY MAIL.
After the marriage has been registered and Births Deaths & Marriages (BDM) issues a marriage certificate, you may need to get an apostille/ authentication stamp. It is important for you to book your appointment with me as soon as you have a date. Please don’t hesitate to get back to me with any queries.
Best wishes with your plans! AB
